Does everyone need moisture?
Many feel they need to avoid moisture at all costs thinking moisture will make their hair feel heavy and oily. The truth is that everyone does need moisture! The trick is knowing why, when, and how to moisturize.
So to answer why everyone needs moisture simply ask yourself; do you want healthy hair? If the answer was yes then you are a part of the “everyone” that needs moisture in their locks. It doesn’t matter if you have fine hair or coarse hair. Hair is hair, and moisture is key to maintaining its health. Think of it this way; you moisturize your skin daily, soak your face in masks and get monthly facials. Your hair needs as much moisture as your skin. When hair gets dry it is the cause of many of your hair issues. Split ends, brittle frizzing ends, and tangles are all common side effects of dry hair. The ends of your hair, being the oldest hair, need extra moisture.
So now that the why is answered we have come to the when. When should you moisturize your hair? The change of seasons plays a big role in when your hair needs moisture most. The season we all struggle with is upon us. Winter is when the air gets colder and dryer. Our heaters turn on which zap the moisture right out of the air and our hair. This makes winter the prime time to moisturize your hair. Though some of us with coarser or dryer hair need it year round.
Now we come to how to moisturize. Although everyone needs moisture, everyones moisturizing routine will look different. However there are some common rules to follow. Your conditioner (any conditioner) should not regularly be applied to the roots. A good rule of thumb is anything that fits in your ponytail and down is what needs conditioned regularly. Everyone should be using a conditioner! Another routine that would benefit everyone is a leave-in conditioner.
Now that we understand moisture and how it applies to everyone lets break down how it applies more specifically to each hair type. Starting with dry medium to coarse hair. Coarse hair is in constant need of moisture! Your routine should include a hydrating shampoo and conditioner every wash. We love Dry Remedy by Aveda, All Soft Mega by Redken, or Hydrate by Pureology. Next you should be using a leave in conditioner. Hydrate Air Dry Cream by Pureology if air drying or Smooth Perfection’s Smoothing Serum by Pureology. If oil is more for you Dry Remedy’s oil by Aveda will be a great go to!
Now we come to fine hair. If you are scared of moisture you probably have fine hair and haven’t ever found the right moisture products or routine. Fine hair doesn’t need moisture daily. If you are deathly scared of moisture you should use a lightweight leave in conditioner every 4-6 washes or more in the winter. Some great lightweight options would be Nutriplenish by Aveda, Colour Fanatic by Pureology or One United by Redken.
These are some great rules to apply however nothing beats a customized routine prescribed specifically for you! Our stylists are the best hair doctors.
